She snatched the paper from my hand and read it twice.

Then she looked up at me — and for the first time since I married her son, she had nothing to say.

But Daniel's car had just turned onto the street.

Daniel pulled into the driveway and cut the engine.

Through the windshield I could see him notice us — me on the front step, the baby in my arms, his mother standing in the doorway with the deed in her hand.

He sat still for a moment.

Then he got out.

"What's going on?" he said.

Diane spoke first.

"She came back."

"I never left," I said.

"I was in the hospital having your daughter."

Daniel looked at the baby.

Something moved across his face — relief, guilt, something I couldn't name.

He walked toward me and reached out his arms.

I let him take her.

He held her against his chest and looked down at her for a long moment without speaking.

Then he looked at his mother.

"Mom.

What did you do?"

"I protected this family," Diane said.

"The way I always have.

While she was lying in that hospital bed, I was here making sure no one took advantage."

"She owns the house," Daniel said.

"You changed the locks on her house."
